Taraba Govt Approves N70,000 Minimum Wage For Workers

Agbu Kefas

The Taraba State government has officially approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 for its workforce, effective November 2024.

This decision comes in response to the December 1 strike notice issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to States that have yet to implement the updated national minimum wage.

According to Paul Maigida Tino, the State Head of Service, “His Excellency, the Governor of Taraba State, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has approved the implementation of a N70,000 new minimum wage for workers in Taraba State, effective from November 2024, in line with his administration’s dedication to meeting the yearnings and aspirations of workers.”

Civil servants have expressed gratitude for the development but emphasized the need for prompt implementation.

They also called for the resumption of annual increments, which have been on hold.

Governor Agbu Kefas had previously stated his commitment to paying the new national minimum wage, aligning with Federal government6 directives.

Information Nigeria reports that the new minimum wage aims to alleviate financial burdens on civil servants, particularly in light of the removal of fuel subsidies and increased cost of living.

With this approval, Taraba State joins the ranks of states committed to implementing the updated national minimum wage.
