Stormzy Faces Nine Months Driving Ban For Using Phone While Driving In UK
Stormzy, a British grime musician, has been banned from driving for nine months after being spotted using a mobile phone while driving his Rolls-Royce Wraith in west London.
The 31-year-old rapper, pleaded guilty via a letter to the offence, which occurred on Addison Road, West Kensington, in March last year, BBC reports Thursday.
Additionally, according to Sky News, District Judge Andrew Sweet, who presided over the Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court, said that Stormzy’s driving record was “not good” and chastised his “dangerous and irresponsible” behaviour.

Multiple reports indicate that the judge added six points to the rapper’s licence, leading to an automatic disqualification, and also imposed a £2,010 fine.
“Get rid of your tints and get off your phone,” the off-duty officer reportedly told Stormzy after knocking on his tinted passenger window, according to accounts shared in court, says The Guardian.
The grime star initially denied the accusation before writing to the court to modify his plea.

This incident marks another in a series of driving-related offences involving the award-winning artist.
In October 2023, Stormzy was stopped while driving a Lamborghini Urus, with his front windows tinted to just 4 percent light transmission, far beneath the legal requirement of 70 percent, according to prosecutor Alice Holloway.
Holloway mentioned that the condition of the vehicle at the time created a potential risk to “vulnerable road users.”
Stormzy was discovered driving the Lamborghini on Coombe Lane in Kingston upon Thames, despite previous warnings, before ultimately removing the illegal tints.
Stormzy’s lawyer, Peter Csemiczky, underlined his client’s acknowledgement of responsibility and commitment to obey the law.
“He apologises and acknowledges his mistakes,” Csemiczky said, adding that the offending tints have now been removed.
Stormzy, a prominent figure in the grime genre, has garnered attention not only for his music but also for his cultural influence. According to Sky News, he made history in 2019 as the first black British solo artist to headline Glastonbury.
This recent legal issue highlights the repercussions of ongoing traffic offences, regardless of one’s fame or status.
The rapper was absent from the court hearing.
Grime is a style of electronic dance music (EDM) that originated in London during the early 2000s, evolving from the UK garage scene.
The term “grime” was introduced by journalists who described its sub-bass-heavy sound as “grimy,” which eventually led to the name “grime.”
