South African government arrests Chidimma Adetshina’s mother over identity fraud

Anabela Rungo, the mother of Nigerian beauty queen, Chidimma Adetshina has been reportedly arrested oover alleged illegal residence in South Africa.
According to local reports, the arrest took place in Cape Town during a coordinated operation involving the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Department of Home Affairs.
Rungo, a Mozambican national, is accused of fraudulently acquiring a South African identity document.

The Department of Home Affairs who confirmed this in a statement on Saturday said the operation conducted by Home Affairs investigators and the South African Police Service, SAPS.

Siya Qoza, Department spokesperson Stated that Rungo had been declared persona non grata in September 2024 after officials discovered irregularities in her residency status.
“Investigators from the department, assisted by SAPS, detained Anabela Rungo at a property in Cape Town. The Department withdrew Rungo’s South African documentation in September 2024 after finding that it had been fraudulently obtained, rendering her ineligible to continue residing in South Africa,” he added
He said that despite this, Rungo continued to reside in South Africa, allegedly using her Mozambican passport to defy her “undesirable” status.
“It appears that Rungo has defied her ‘undesirable’ status through her Mozambican passport. Investigations are ongoing into further potential misrepresentation and fraudulent conduct.
“After being processed by Home Affairs over her illegal continued residence in South Africa, she will be handed over to SAPS, as she is also the subject of an ongoing Hawks investigation,” he added.
In September, 2024, Ms. Rungo’s official South African documents were revoked due to an allegation of identity fraud in obtaining citizenship, rendering her ineligible to reside in the country.
Disregarding the authority’s order, Rungo was reportedly residing in Cape Town with Chidimma’s sibling, using her Mozambican passport.

Since contesting in the South African beauty pageantry, Chidimma constantly faced the issue of identity, particularly because of her name, which does not have any root in South Africa but Nigeria.
Chidimma’s identity issue had pushed her towards her dream, when she became Miss Nigeria 2024, after an initial rejection in South Africa.
