Notable Events That Shaped Nigeria In 2022
The Year 2022 was an eventful one, some good and some bad. As the country enters the Year 2023, Information Nigeria takes a brief look at the few notable events that shaped the outgoing year.
ASUU Strike:
The Academic Staff Union of Universities embarked on an indefinite nationwide strike on February 14 to press home demands for better welfare, while asking the Federal Government to abide by the 2009 agreement they both had.
On October 14, ASUU suspended its eight-month strike after the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige secured an order from the National Industrial Court to call of the industrial action.
Buhari signs 2022 Electoral Act:
On February 26, President Muhammadu Buhari signed the 2022 Electoral Act 2022 into law while on May 11, the Senate amended the passed 2022 Electoral Act to allow statutory delegates participate in party primaries.
INEC sets date for 2023 election:
On February 27, the Independent National Electoral Commission rescheduled the 2023 presidential and national assembly elections for February 25.
Presidential primaries:
BOLA TINUBU: On June 8, former Lagos State Governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu defeated the Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, Senate President Ahmed Lawan, and others, to become the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
ATIKU ABUBAKAR: On May 28, former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, once again emerged a presidential candidate, this time for the Peoples’ Democratic Party after defeating the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, and others.
PETER OBI: On May 30, Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, emerged the presidential candidate of the Labour Party ahead of the forthcoming general elections, after the three co-contenders – Professor Pat Utomi, Olubusola Emmanuel-Tella, and Faduri Joseph – stepped down.
Owo Massacre:
On June 5, gunmen attacked the St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, killing no fewer than 50 worshippers.
Kuja prison attack:
On July 5, some gunmen attacked the Kuje prison near Abuja, with no fewer than 600 of the nearly 900 inmates escaping. While some of the inmates returned voluntarily, almost six months after, many of them are still at large.
Buhari’s convoy attack:
On July 5, Presidential Buhari’s spokesman, Garba Shehu confirmed that bandits opened fire on the president’s convoy of cars carrying the Advance Team of security guards, protocol and media officers ahead of the president’s trip to Daura to celebrate Sallah.
Amusan breaks world record:
Tobi Amusan became the first Nigerian to win gold at the World Athletics Championships by breaking the world record time of 12.06s. She achieved the feat by going faster than the 12.12s world record time she ran in the semi-finals. However, her 12.06s in the final wasn’t recognised as a world record due to the over 2m/s wind speed.
Cash withdrawal limit:
On December 7, The Central Bank of Nigeria set cash withdrawal limits to N100,000 weekly for individuals and N500,000 for corporate organisations. Then on December 22, the apex bank raised the weekly cash withdrawal limits for individuals and corporate organisations to N500,000 and N5 million for corporate organisations.
Policeman kills pregnant lawyer and realtor:
Vandi, who was attached to the Ajiwe Police Station, Ajah, Lagos State, who is said to have spent 33 years in the police force, was however sent to prison by a Lagos court.
The killing of Raheem is one of the many incidents of police brutality and extrajudicial killings that were recorded across the country in 2022.
