Nnamdi Kanu Files N20bn Suit Against Adejobi For Calling IPOB “Proscribed Terrorist Organisation”

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB), has filed a defamation lawsuit against Olumuyiwa Adejobi, spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), seeking N20 billion in damages.

Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, filed the suit at a Federal Capital Territory high court on Tuesday, alleging that Adejobi’s press statement on January 25 portrayed Kanu as a terrorist leader.

The statement described IPoB as “a proscribed terrorist organisation” and claimed that six “notorious kingpins” belonging to the Eastern Security Network (ESN) and IPoB were neutralized by the Imo police command.

According to the suit, Kanu claims that Adejobi’s statements were “false and constitute a grave libel on his person, as the words in their natural and ordinary meaning portrayed him as a leader of a violent and terrorist group.”

Kanu also stated that “the defamatory statements read by his brother and circle of friends in Abuja and Nigeria at large were false and constitute a grave libel on his person.”

Furthermore, Kanu alleged that “the defendant’s libellous publications and utterances have seriously injured the claimant’s character, credit, reputation, and integrity and resulted in significant prejudice against the claimant regarding his cases pending in court in Abuja and elsewhere in Nigeria.”

Kanu is seeking an order from the court directing Adejobi to retract the statements, publish an unreserved apology in three national dailies, and “pay N20 billion” in general and exemplary damages.

“The letter of apology shall be prominently and boldly published full-page in three (3) national dailies, namely: the SUN, Daily Trust, and Vanguard,” the suit read.

Additionally, Kanu is seeking a “perpetual injunction” restraining Adejobi from further uttering the defamatory words.
