JUST IN: Nigerian government declares October 1 as public holiday for 64th Independence Day celebration

The Nigerian government has declared Tuesday, 1st of October 2024, a public holiday to commemorate the nation’s 64th Independence Day Anniversary.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani in a statement on Saturday said the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government.

While congratulating Nigerians at home and abroad on this occasion, Tunji-Ojo praised the patient and hardworking Nigerian men and women, stating that their sacrifices would not be in vain.

Aligning himself with the theme for the anniversary, the Minister reiterated the need for Nigerians to reflect on the “labour of our heroes past and be inspired for the tasks ahead, realizing that a Nigeria of our dream can only be built when we unite.”

The minister congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the occasion.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo also praised the patient and hardworking Nigerian men and women, stating that their sacrifices will not be in vain.

“While wishing Nigerians a Happy Independence Day Anniversary, Dr. Tunji-Ojo urged the citizens to continue to be steadfast in nation-building”, the statement added.

The 64th Independence Day celebration stated to be low-key started with a ministerial briefing on Thursday. On Friday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu alongside other Muslim faithful held a special Jumat prayer at the National Central Mosque Abuja.

A special service will be held on Sunday, at the National Ecumenical Centre, Abuja.
