The “Not Like Us” rapper made history on Sunday as the first solo rap artist to headline the event, but it was his special guests—SZA and Serena Williams—who set social media on fire.
Both women have past ties to Canadian rapper Drake, Lamar’s longtime rival. SZA took the stage alongside Lamar to perform their collaborations “Luther” from his latest album GNX and “All the Stars” from the Black Panther soundtrack. Meanwhile, Williams electrified the crowd by crip walking to Lamar’s No. 1 hit “Not Like Us.”
“Kendrick Lamar is proof that having an arch nemesis is a fundamental part of the human experience,” one fan wrote on X.
SZA and Drake dated in the late 2000s, with the R&B singer later calling their romance “so childish” in a 2023 interview. Drake previously referenced their relationship in the 2020 song “Mr. Right Now.” Williams and Drake were linked in 2015, and the rapper reportedly confirmed their romance in archival studio footage that surfaced in August 2024.
After her surprise halftime show appearance, Williams shared her excitement on Instagram, writing, “Let’s go Super Bowl halftime??! I died a little! 💃🏿”
Fans quickly pointed out the deeper meaning behind Lamar’s guest choices, interpreting it as another jab at Drake.
“Serena Williams crip walking to a song about you being a pedophile has to hurt existentially,” one user wrote.
“Kendrick getting the entire Super Bowl screaming ‘a minor’ with Serena Williams dancing has to feel like a shotgun blast to Drake’s chest,” another added.
Others marveled at Lamar’s attention to detail. “Panning to Serena Williams crip walking was so insane. Let alone teasing the song and then cutting to SZA,” a fan wrote. “This man is insane, his mind omg.”
Lamar’s halftime show may have been a celebration of hip-hop, but for many, it was also the latest chapter in his high-profile feud with Drake.
