Carabao Cup: City beat holders Liverpool to reach quarterfinals

Nathan Ake scored his first goal of the season as Manchester City defeated defending champions Liverpool 3-2 in the fifth-round League Cup tie at the Etihad on Thursday night.

Two of Europe’s top sides returned to action after an enforced break due to the World Cup, but the pace of the game did not look like either was rusty.

Erling Haaland said recently that he couldn’t wait for the World Cup to end, and he needed only ten minutes to open the scoring with his 24th goal in 19 games this season.

Fabio Carvalho equalised ten minutes later, but Riyad Mahrez put City back ahead immediately after the break with a beautiful curling effort. Less than a minute later, Darwin Nunez laid the ball on a plate for Salah to return the game to level pegging.

Nunez himself missed three golden opportunities to put Liverpool ahead before Nathan Ake pounced on a precise Kevin de Bruyne cross – his second assist of the night – to give Manchester City the victory.
